Origins of infinity

Where light remembers its first breath, and the universe still hums with creation

iNSPIRATION

In Origins of Infinity, I have sought to capture the eternal rhythm of the expanding Universe, a rhythm that began with creation — the moment when silence turned into sound, and light was born from darkness. This mosaic represents that very cosmic vision — scientifically termed as the Big Bang.  Through the timeless symbols of Aboriginal art, I have sought to translate a scientific phenomenon into a spiritual narrative of light, sound, and eternal becoming.  I have always been captivated by the eternal moment when our Universe was created and have tried to imagine it artistically through several forms.  This iteration of my practice represents the cosmic awakening in the artistic concepts of Australian Aboriginal art. I felt that this ancient artform — with its rhythmic dots and repetitive motifs, set in expanding rhythms, made bold through concentric representation, and flowing pathways, all expressed through repetitive parallel lines — could most accurately express the cosmic pulse of creation. Moreover, the Aboriginal vision of the Dreamtime, where the Universe is sung into existence through energy and movement, mirrors, in art, the expansive force of the Big Bang.

eXPRESSION

Origins of Infinity is created using precisely hand-cut tesserae, arranged in rhythmic, concentric patterns that follow the principles of andamento — the directional flow that guides the viewer’s eye through the work.  Variations in textured tiles, their painstakingly cut uneven surface heights, and careful spacing allows light to dance across the mosaic, giving it a sense of vibration and breath.

Origins of Infinity is a visual meditation on the birth and continuity of the Universe. And also, the continuity of life.  It translates the cosmic event of the Big Bang into flowing, concentric forms that echo both energy and eternity. Through the circular geometry of the pattern and its repetitive rhythm, that expands with every concentric circle, I have represented how creation was not a single event lost in time, but is an ongoing, accelerating pulse — one that continues to shape and expand our Universe.

The vibrant red central core of the mosaic, made of a ‘smalti pizza’, represents the first pulse of energy — the sacred spark from which light, life, and matter emerged. This central red core radiating outwards,  like a living heartbeat, suggests the divine and scientific truth that the Universe still hums with that first vibration — the sacred resonance that connects all existence. Its concentric forms emanate outwards in rhythmic waves, echoing both the scientific idea of a continuously  expanding Universe, with that of the Aboriginal belief in a world continually being sung into existence.

And in this unending rhythm, we are reminded that creation is not behind us, but forever unfolding through us and around us.
