tree of life
In its roots lies remembrance, in its crown, the eternal spark—
the Tree of Life breathes creation through every living arc.
The Tree of Life is an enduring symbol that transcends culture and time — a universal expression of creation, interconnectedness, and renewal.
Across centuries, the Tree of Life was painted with natural fluid pigments, drawn from minerals. Lapis blues, malachite greens, golds and umbers were traditionally used. By representing this timeless motif in mosaics, I have given it a new voice. I have transformed the painted flow into a sculpted rhythm, not only giving it permanence but also the pulse of light. While paint breathes through pigment, mosaic breathes through reflection, light itself has become my colour palette. My mosaic trees are simply not seen, they glimmer, as though illuminated from within. Each tesserae emitting a living energy.
In my Tree of Life mosaics, I seek to unite the organic and the spiritual — grounding the form in the textures of stone and marble, while lifting it through the luminosity of glass and smalti. The usage of these materials has enabled me to transform an age old image into a luminous structure, making for a breath-taking experience.
The Tree of Life series began as a contemplation of the three different aspects of life, portrayed through mosaics: The Tree of Light, The Tree of Stillness and The Tree of Renewal. They stand as companions in spirit — one celebrating the living pulse of creation, another embodying the quiet reflection that sustains it, and the third awakening the promise of rebirth within it.
While the Tree of Light reaches outward, radiant with growth, vitality, and colour, the Tree of Stillness, by contrast, turns inward, its branches poised in contemplation. It is a reflection of the pause that precedes renewal, the inner calm from which life draws its strength. Further, The Tree of Renewal, with its roots ascending to the sky, mirrors the Upanishadic vision of life nourished from above.
Together, they complete the circle of being — movement finding stillness, stillness giving birth to renewal, and renewal awakening life once more - each complementing and deepening the other.
