Echoes of the ancient

Across the quiet centuries they call,

their voices carried in dust and mosaic fire.

We listen with our hands, our seeing eyes—

and shape their echoes into the now.

I have long been drawn to the spiritual symbols and sacred art of ancient cultures — to their way of seeing the world as a living bridge between matter and spirit.  I find meaning in sacred symbols that transcend cultures and time. The Om motif and the mandalas of India on the one hand and the concentric formations of Australian Aboriginal arts on the other, are both symbols that speak of unity, creation, and balance. Their enduring patterns of flow and connection inspired me to translate these forms into mosaic — not just for their beauty, but for their deeper call toward harmony and the soul’s search for meaning.

The art of the Australian Aboriginal people, is based on the ancient tradition of the Dreamtime. In their belief, Ancestral Beings shaped the earth and left behind songlines — invisible paths that weave together land, life, and spirit. Aboriginal art expresses these stories through ancient symbols using dots, concentric circles, and flowing lines, each representing journeys, waterholes, meeting places, or spiritual energy. To the initiated, these symbols reveal layered meanings; to others, they remain mysterious abstractions.

Inspired by these motifs, I chose to create a series of mosaics that echo those ancient songlines, allowing light, texture, and colour to become the language through which the unseen continues to speak of ancient wisdom.

In the Echoes of the Ancients series, I have reimagined the Dreamtime as a luminous field where light, tesserae, and aboriginal tradition intertwine. Each mosaic becomes a contemporary “songline”, its pathways of tesserae mirroring the ancestral tracks that once traversed sacred landscapes. While being wordless to us, these ancient stories were customarily passed down only through the oral tradition within the aboriginal community. My mosaics capture the artistic aspect of these ancient stories through colour, flow, and the reflected light of tesserae — carrying forward the essence of a wisdom that knows no boundary between the original creation and the now.

SONGLINES OF LIGHT

Infused with the spirit of Australian Aboriginal traditions, this backlit mosaic lamp glows with a serene, contemplative warmth. Its spiralling forms and layered circles recall timeless journeys and sacred kinships, guiding sight and soul through gentle tides of motion and stillness. Once illuminated, it becomes a quiet sanctuary of light — a vessel of harmony where illumination rises from within, inviting a peaceful inward drift.
