iNSPIRATION

Inspired by Australian Aboriginal art, The Songlines of Light mosaic reflects the spirit of the Dreamtime — when ancestral beings shaped the world through song and rhythm. In the Dreamtime realm, ancestral beings travelled across the land, leaving energetic tracks known as songlines. My inspiration for The Songlines of Light came from the way Aboriginal art evokes the feeling of energy in motion — a sense of stories travelling, connecting, and illuminating the landscape.

eXPRESSION

The Songlines of Light is a luminous, rhythmic, and deeply meditative mosaic, embracing symbols of connection to creation.  It invites quiet reflection,  its gentle rhythm and flowing patterns draw the viewer into a state of stillness, drawing the soul towards calm and balance. The concentric ovals evoke the sacred meeting places and waterholes of the Dreamtime — gathering points of life, spirit, and story. The horizontal bands suggest songlines, the invisible paths that link one landscape to another, just as they link generations through song and memory. The warm tones of gold, amber, and ivory radiate an inner light, symbolizing the spiritual energy that flows through all creation.

The mosaic is created by using a combination of marble, ceramic and a variety of translucent and luminous glass tesserae, all carefully hand-cut and placed to follow rhythmic lines of flow. The technique draws from the principle of andamento, where the direction of each tesserae creates movement and visual harmony. Subtle variations in the height and texture of each individual piece allow the surface to catch and scatter light, adding a shimmering vitality. The warm gold and amber palette enhances the sense of sacred energy, recalling the glow of desert earth under sunlight. Through meticulous placement and layering, I have transformed ancient Aboriginal patterns into a contemporary mosaic language of light and spirit.

The interplay of marble’s earthiness, ceramic’s texture, and the ethereal glow of luminous glass evokes the union of land and spirit, central to the Aboriginal vision. Gold tesserae glimmer like spirit-echoes — timeless presences that link the visible to the unseen.

I have chosen to light the mosaic from behind.  Through this, I hoped to awaken the inner life of the work, allowing the piece to shift from a static surface into a living presence. By lighting the mosaic from within, the piece resonates with the Dreamtime sentiment that creation is alive, continuous, and quietly pulsing beneath everything we see. The tranquil glow suggests that these pathways are eternal — always present, always guiding, always singing their story to those who pause long enough to listen.

Illuminating the mosaic from behind symbolically mirrors the idea of Dreamtime. The backlighting turns every line, curve, and colour into something that breathes, mirroring how Dreamtime stories are not just recited but experienced as living currents of energy.  The light becomes the ancestral energy, moving beneath the surface of the mosaic.  The patterns become the pathways, glowing with meaning, story, and movement.  The mosaic itself becomes a map of the living spirit, not just an artwork.
