Mosaics: The Poetry of Pieces
A fine-art mosaic begins as an assembly of thousands of hand-cut tesserae —tiny pieces of glass, marble, smalti, stone or ceramic. A deliberate gathering of parts to create a meaningful composition. Once combined, these tesserae form an expressive field –moving with rhythm, breathing with light and awakening a felt emotion.
Fine art mosaic is a deeply labour-intensive practice, demanding prolonged physical engagement, technical precision, and a sustained dialogue between hand, material, and mind. Each work involves the cutting, placing, and orienting of thousands of tesserae, often employing multiple techniques (these techniques are described subsequently), and can take several months to complete. It is perhaps this very combination of physical rigour, time commitment, and technical complexity that has made fine art mosaics rarer today—yet it is also that which gives the medium its depth, integrity, and an enduring presence.
To me, a mosaic mirrors life itself: each piece, placed with intention that together builds towards an overall vision. Teaching us that in our life too, beauty can arise from assembly, intention, patience, and vision.
The mosaic-making process involves two fundamental phases: the conceptualisation of the mosaic, and the hands-on process of making it. Every mosaic begins with the definition of a theme and the accompanying emotion it seeks to awaken. It is not only beauty that is envisioned at this stage, but a specific inner state: stillness, devotion, joy, or quiet contemplation. Over the course of my practice, I have developed and employed different techniques to give form to these emotional intentions. For instance, spirituality as a theme may seek to evoke devotion as an emotion.
Only after this inner and conceptual foundation is set, does the second phase begin: the active, physical process of making the mosaic, where material and technique translate thought into form.
