iNSPIRATION

While on a family holiday to London, I visited a piano jazz bar in Soho. I was captivated by the magical way that these local jazz artists created spontaneous music: alive in the moment, each a new rhythm from pure feeling.  As I listened, I watched them improvise, responding to one another with effortless grace, their smiles revealing the joy of shared creation. In their rhythm and spontaneity, in that spirit of creation, I sensed life’s own flow — how we, too, shape our paths anew, aligning with life’s shifting  circumstances. It was in that living dialogue between sound and feeling that my As the Soul Begins to Sing mosaic took form, representing the creative freedom of jazz music.

As the Soul Begins to Sing is an ode to the moment when inner joy finds its voice, when emotion transcends thought and becomes pure expression. The mosaic mirrors that awakening — radiant, fluid, and alive with movement. Its vibrant forms and shimmering colours echo the soul’s own music, rising and falling in rhythm with the heart’s exuberance. It is a celebration of the luminous freedom that comes when life itself feels like a song. Through the materials, their colour and composition, I sought to capture the exhilarating spirit of improvisation, of the moment when the inner self awakens to joy.

eXPRESSION

Layered colours, flowing lines, and glowing musical motifs evoke the interplay between sound and emotion, structure and spontaneity. The syncopated beat of jazz becomes the pulse of life itself, reflected in radiant colours and fluid patterns that dance across the surface like sound waves turned to light. Each tesserae is a note, each shimmering tile shard a breath, together composing a visual symphony of spontaneity and spirit.

Just as jazz bends time and form to create fluidity, this mosaic seeks to capture the movement of joy itself — uncontained, ever-changing, and deeply alive. It is an invitation to listen with the eyes, to feel the pulse beneath the surface, and to recognize that life, at its most beautiful, is a dance of rhythm beyond form. Fluorescent pink notes glimmer like whispers of melody, representing the invisible frequencies of emotion. The surrounding radiance of luminous golds, the warm tones of deep oranges symbolise vitality and creative fire, while the deeper hues anchor the piece in contemplation and depth.

Through this interplay of tone and texture, the work celebrates life’s innate rhythm — the exuberant joy that arises when emotion finds its voice. The mosaic becomes a living composition, where each fragment vibrates with its own tempo, yet together they form a harmonious whole — much like a jazz ensemble finding unity in freedom. In its essence, this mosaic becomes both song and silence — a visual symphony of the soul remembering how to sing.

When joy awakens, it rises like light through colour,

a quiet soul becoming a song, the universe can hear.
